In 2018 Ief Spincemaille created the artwork ‘Rope’: a rope of 60 meters in length and 30 cm in diameter. Rope has been made disproportionately large and has therefore lost its function. Spincemaille travels around the world with Rope to give it new meaning. Besides creating a great artwork, Spincemaille reinvented seating without realizing it. Ropes of 12 and 6 meters are currently being used by cities, companies and private customers, to create temporary social spaces, to play and to knot shapes and encounters. And with a mobile braiding workshop, Rope can be braided in-situ with or without the help of the local community or customer. Rope, just as many of the Ateliers other works, is a social sculpture: a medium which brings imagination and people together. Do something with Rope!

Rope blogs about it’s experiences, telling a tale about the places where it has been. These stories result in a journal of the places Rope has visited.
JOURNAL#5 KIEL ANTWERP
5 DAYS AND NIGHTS ROPE WAS A GUEST IN KORTRIJK (BE)
From the 14th of September until the 19th of September Rope stayed in the Belgium city of Kortrijk. An alleyway, a bicycle workshop, an improvised mosque, a standing seesaw, a psychiatric hospital for a day and a night are some examples of the places Rope visited. In the meantime, in the Texture museum, on a mobile braiding installation, visitors to the museum worked on braiding a 12-meter Rope which, unlike the long Rope, will stay in Kortrijk.
It is the last day. They put me on the square in front of the city theater to perform two movements with about 30 carriers, which refer to the shapes and movements we made during the first two days. The porters are accidental passers-by and people we have met the last few days. With a small rope Ief practises the sequences and the correct positions of the carriers.
At 16h everyone is present. Half the group gets a blue sticker and stands to my left, the other half stands to my right. Thomas, whom we met yesterday at the hospital, stands in the middle. He is completely dressed in white. The porters lift me up and walk towards Thomas. I fold, like a sheet that you fold together. I move over my entire length, except for the piece that lies in Thomas' arms. Everyone steps back from the middle until I am stretched out again in a completely straight line. I am laid back on the ground. Everyone applauds.
This is the end of this journey.
Rope was in Kortrijk at the invitation of BK6, with partners such as Texture, OCMW Kortrijk | Wijkteams, Buda Kunstencentrum, Schouwburg Kortrijk and Vormingplus. We were assisted by Katrien Voet, Naima Delaere, Michiel Breye, Sander Dragt, Bout De Beul and Aafke Remant. Willem Jones will process the filmed material into a reportage. A Rope of 12 meters was braided in Texture this week. It will stay in Kortrijk and, together with the newsreel of Rope, it will be the permanent messenger of this five day journey.
Many thanks to Fietsen Marcel Kint, the residents of the Sint-Anna beluik, the residents and the community committee of the Volksplein, the Psychiatric Hospital Holy Family and the Sint Amandsbasisschool.
